Background
On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the seaside city of Tacloban in the Philippines with a force considered to have been one of the strongest in recorded history.
The storm obliterated homes, forcing survivors to live in the dark in makeshift evacuation centres.
The city's power lines were cut and, since roads were destroyed, there were no supplies of kerosene and batteries for lamps. For several days, the city was in total darkness.
Idea
Pepsi stepped in quickly to give the one thing it could give the most – hope, Since 2011, Pepsi had been helping create and distribute lights made from used plastic Pepsi bottles filled with a solution of water and bleach.
Now the company was able to bring its newly designed solar-powered Pepsi lamps to Tacloban and where there was despair bring a glimmer of optimism. The accompanying donation drive, also led by Pepsi, ensured as many Night Lights as were needed got made and brought to the areas that needed them most.
Results
In just over four weeks, Night Lights were already being deployed in four communities and were set to benefit 4,500 individuals.
It may take months or even years to fully restore electricity in Tacloban. So Pepsi is already driving another round of donation, production and implementation of Night Lights to help with the ongoing rehabilitation of Haiyan's survivors.
Our Thoughts
BBDO Guerrero certainly put their talents to good use after Typhoon Haiyan struck last year. They also feature in this issue with their unselfie idea (on pages 38-39). What they did so quickly here was to action an idea they had already developed with their Pepsi client. The Bottle Light project was already helping solve an existing problem but it needed a light to go on in someone’s head to get more Bottle Lights produced and sent to Tacloban. It was an idea that was of benefit to 4,500 people. Great job.
