Background

In 2011, an earthquake struck Japan. The problem was that aid went first to humans but pets also had lost both owners, homes and private space.

Idea

Relief supplies shipped in to the most affected areas were put in boxes, which, with minor modification, could be turned into kennels and shelters for pets after use.

Results

The Pet House was used in 72 animal shelters for 3,000 pets. 88 companies, NGOs and universities collaborated. February 2012: Fukushima animal shelter closed because it was no longer needed. All 329 pets it housed found new homes. The Pet House not only played a role in the shipping of relief goods, it brought peace of mind to animal lovers.
