Background
On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the seaside city of Tacloban in the Philippines with a force considered to have been one of the strongest in recorded history.
The storm obliterated homes, forcing survivors to live in the dark in makeshift evacuation centres.
The city's power lines were cut and, since roads were destroyed, there were no supplies of kerosene and batteries for lamps. For several days, the city was in total darkness.
