Star Wars ad from the Philippines has the world watching ‘til the end. The ad from telecom brand goes viral for heartwarming twist.
So many brands rode on the excitement for the last instalment of the Star Wars saga – The Rise of Skywalker, but one film stood out for good reason. In a film by agency Wunderman Thompson Philippines for telecom and media giant Globe, two boys build a homemade 4D movie experience with an array of random objects. After they manually make water splash, phones vibrate, and confetti explode, the boys gesture with their hands, “Did you like it?” and we realize that their friend is deaf. They made the contraption so she can enjoy Star Wars.
All over the world, organizations for people with disabilities praised and shared the film to drive conversations on inclusivity, diversity, and representation. “Star Wars at its core is a story about inclusivity, with a diverse group of characters from different parts of the galaxy uniting for a common goal. This is what makes the franchise so endearing to fans all over the world, and we feel it’s the same reason the spot resonated with so many people as well,” explains Javey Villones, Creative Director for the campaign.
Hitting 21 million views in just two weeks, the film even caught the attention of Academy Award Winner, Marlee Matlin, who retweeted the film, and Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy, who shared in an interview for the Rise of Skywalker, “This is one of the best I’ve ever seen. I’m trying to get it to play in the United States because it’s so well done, so moving. Absolutely fantastic.”
